Skin tags are nothing more than an unsightly cosmetic condition that if left untreated poses no threat to the sufferer. Many people find themselves self conscious about the way they look with an excess of these or larger skin tags that can be easily seen. If you find you are one of these individuals there are a variety of treatments that can be done to remedy the situation. Skin tags removal may be done at home or in doctors office.
Skin tags or acrochordons are caused by friction of the skin. It is important to note that these are in no way contagious. Common areas where you will find them are the underarm area and on the neck. For women it is common to find them in the bra area. They have no cancerous outcome and are a nuisance but have no need for immediate treatment. If they become irritated you may want to remove them or have them removed by a physician.
They can occur with just about any person although generally found in persons that are middle age. Approaching the age of 60 and over they become even more common. Being overweight will also increase the occurrence of skin tags. It is not nearly as likely to find them in young children, but can occur on occasion.
Having them removed by a physician can be time consuming and costly, although certainly an option for someone who doesn't want to do the removal themselves. If having them removed at a physicians office they generally use a local anesthetic and freeze the affected area. Once it is frozen they remove it with a scalpel. The most painful part of the procedure is truthfully the anesthetic. For someone who is uncomfortable with needles this isn't always the most pleasant experience.
A physician may also use electric cautery to remove the tag. The most common side effect with this type of removal as with freezing is temporary discoloration at the removal site. Occasionally they may fail to fall off after the procedure.
There are other less invasive remedies that can be done at home. One of these options is cutting the skin tag with scissors. Obviously it is advisable to make sure you sterilize the scissors first, but can be easily done by this method.
Another removal option is tying off the skin tag with a piece of thread or dental floss. This will usually take a couple of days for it to die off and fall away. However this is a cost effective and simple home remedy for removal of the unsightly piece of skin.
Another available treatment option that can be done at home without a prescription is a topical ointment. Similar to wart remover these remedies are applied directly to the sight and may take a few treatments to see results. These will vary in price but are an affordable option that may be used easily. Having skin tags poses no medical threat. With that said many people will choose to remove them for the cosmetic outcome. Choose a method that is affordable and you are comfortable using.
